London: Thomas M’Lean, 1825. First Edition. Very Scarce, sm4to – small quarto – 26.8 cm. Frontis, Title Page, Preface, List of Plates. Unpaginated. 50 hand-colored aquatint plates by H. (Henry) Alken. Printed title, preface; each plate with text leaf. Bound in contemporary three-quarter red straight-grained morocco and plain peach paper covered boards, spine with bright simple gilt ruling and title. Boards a trifle rubbed and corners slightly worn. Some light foxing to end leaves and to some text pages throughout, some offsetting from the color plates to the facing text pages. Hinges strong, no prior ownership markings. The quality of paper used had very pleasing tactile and acoustical qualities. Overall a Very Good copy housed in a custom drop-back case of quarter morocco and light red cloth, gilt ruling and title on spine, interior of case with marbled paper lining. Henry Alken’s images are prized for the knowledgeable and faithful depictions of the hunting and coaching scenes he illustrates. This well-preserved quarto edition follows the famous folio edition of 1821. Very Scarce.
