Published simultaneously with the first UK and US editions under the same title, this publication’s related article, images and three advertisements served as a promotion for Shackleton’s two volume publication and his upcoming speaking tour. This is Sir Ernest Shackleton’s account of the failed attempt at the reaching the South Pole which fell short by reaching Farthest South at 88º23’, or approximately 97 nautical miles, but paved the way for Scott and Amundsen who reached the pole in 1911. This expedition was also the first to reach the Magnetic South Pole, the first to ascend the volcano Mt. Erebus, and substantially added to the knowledge of the geology and biology of the region.
